Tianrong (Tina) Wu was commissioned to design Dessau Effect III 2022, a studio booklet showcasing students’ work from the design studio of the same name.
The participating students included Shimin Zhou, Yibo Lin, Gene Lee, Daniela Pardo, Hanqin Tang, Avery Lakeman, Juanita Cardona, Tianrong (Tina) Wu, Boge Lyu, Alicia Coto, Natalee Easthom, Tianchen Xu, and Yanguang Zhu.
Conceived as both a collection and a record of the design studio — including a field trip to Dessau, Germany — the booklet integrates the syllabus, student projects, and photographs from the trip. Tianrong was responsible for designing the overall layout and refining students’ drawings of various styles to ensure visual consistency. René Davids served as the editor, reviewing and refining the introductory paragraphs and overall text.
As the third iteration of this design studio, which takes place every three years, the booklet adopts red — one of the iconic Bauhaus colors — as its theme. Inspired by the studio’s focus on redline planning in Dessau, red is incorporated throughout the design, including red-filtered photographs and red sidebars marking the first page of each student’s chapter for clear section divisions.
